Show off your House by Decorating your Lawn
 If a man's (or woman's) home is his castle, then his front lawn is the Palace Grounds, and whether a person is visiting your home as a guest, or as a prospective buyer, the lawn is the first thing they see and the first impression they get. This means that one of the best ways of stretching your home-improvement dollar, as far as establishing good equity goes, is basic landscaping.
When most people hear the word 'landscaping,' they start to think about dogwoods and backhoes, but this need not be so. The addition of a path or paving stone walkway in the lawn can make the lawn seem much more attractive and well-kept, and a patio can provide a great location for grilling and entertaining, and either of these improvements can raise the value of your home by more than they cost to implement.
The temptation with equity-boosting projects such as these, of course, is to dig out your work gloves and take the old do-it-yourself route. But before you head off to the hardware store and come back with a backseat full of flagstones and bricks, remember that there are professionals who can handle this sort of thing. By the time you pay a hardware store's retail markup on the raw material for the project, you'll be in the price range of the pros anyway, and if your aim is to have a lasting, durable and attractive finished product, it's probably a good idea to leave the bricklaying to those with the right experience and tools. Some basic landscaping can also be used in conjunction with a decorative garden, or a piece such as a bird bath, to really give your lawn a unique and prosperous feel.

Q – Hi – I am trying to improve my kitchen. Sometimes I feel almost claustrophobic working or cleaning in there, but I'm not sure I'm ready to invest the money in a big remodel. What can I do? - Lisa Attington
A – Well Lisa, I haven't seen your kitchen, but I know that one major improvement which can be made to almost any kitchen is a sink upgrade. Having a deeper and better made kitchen sink can help the whole room – pots and pans can be more easily washed, and anything that makes cleanup easier will help the kitchen feel roomier and nicer, and having a new sink installed is quite affordable.

A Hot Tub or Jacuzzi to Boost Your Equity
 The recent economic problems have, of course, been well reported, and hardly count as news any more. Less well reported is sound advice on what people can do to ensure their own stability. One often-overlooked method of helping oneself out in hard times is to build up equity in one's home. Often simple, lifestyle-boosting remodels can provide an affordable way of improving the quality of one's life while increasing the value of one's home.
A good suggestion here is to install a hot tub or Jacuzzi. Installing such a device has a twofold advantage. First, as mentioned above, it provides a real boost to the equity you possess in your home, more than justifying the extra expense, and second, it benefits you, in the here and now, with a stress relieving and relaxing way to end the day. Your contractor can probably build your hot tub on to the edge of an existing deck or porch, making the process of building equity and improving your life even easier.
A lot of people live in cold climates, and don't have the room to put a hot tub inside their house, and are reluctant to install a device that can't be used in the winter, but this is no cause for concern. For one thing, an outdoor hot tub can be a surprisingly enjoyable experience on a wintry night. The hot water provides a balancing contrast with the cold air, and few things can be as romantic as looking up from a warm bath into the starry sky. Of course, extreme climates or frequent precipitation may put a damper on this experience, in which case the choice is simple: have someone build a small, cost-effective outdoor structure to house your hot tub. A standalone gazebo, or one connected to a deck, will cost surprisingly little, and will make your hot tub or Jacuzzi a pleasant experience during even the most inclement of weather. And remember, homes with hot tubs are always popular places to visit, since they provide a relaxing place for an evening of drinks and discussion.
