Keys to Securing Your Home: 5 Easy Ways to Help Protect Your Home
Many high-tech, high-priced home security products are available today. Fortunately, there are less expensive - but no less effective - ways to protect your home, too. Check out these smart home security tips!
Eliminate Hiding Places. Keep all entry points to your house well lit. Trim shrubs and trees that could provide cover for an intruder. Trim tree limbs that could enable intruders to gain entry via an upper-floor window or balcony and keep items such as ladders locked inside the house.
Don't be an easy target. Burglars want to hit the easiest target on the block so give them reasons to skip your house. Home-security decals or "Beware of Dog" signs are good deterrents. Home security alarms are also good. A subscription to a monitoring service isn't always necessary. The sound of an alarm is often enough to scare off a thief.
Lock windows and doors. Department of Justice statistics report more than half of all burglaries occur with no sign of forced entry -- meaning a robber was able to enter the house through an unlocked door or window. Use a heavy-duty deadbolt that is bolted to the door frame with three-inch screws.
Appear to be home. When you're away, have someone pick up your mail and newspaper or have them stopped for the duration of your trip. In addition, have someone mow your lawn. Also, use timers to turn specific lights on and off in the house to make it seem as if someone is home.
Know your neighbors. Make sure neighbors know when you're planning to be away and how they can reach you in an emergency. Leaving an extra key with a trusted neighbor is a good idea. It's better than hiding one under a mat or in some other outdoor hiding place. l.

Q - I'm getting ready to retire my propane grill for the season. Can you tell me the best way to clean it? - Mark Handley
A - Begin by making sure that the grill's controls are in the "off" position. Next, close the propane tank valve and disconnect it from your grill. Next combine hot water and a common liquid dish soap designed for cutting grease. Remove the grill racks and soak in the water solution for 30 minutes. Use a soft cloth soaked in the solution to remove built-up grease from the burners. Scrape the inside walls clean with a sturdy spatula. To finish, use a wet-dry vacuum to remove the debris and solution from your grill. Once the grill is completely dry, you're ready to store it for the season.

UNEARTH LAWN CARE MYTHS
Have you ever felt as if, no matter what you do, your lawn is never as green and healthy as you'd like? If so, you may have fallen victim to common lawn care myths.
Myth 1: Fertilizers and weed controls form the foundation of a healthy lawn. The Home and Garden Television (HGTV) network explains soil that can soak up water and drain easily is the foundation of a healthy lawn. Healthy soil contains helpful life forms like micro-organisms and worms that help allow essential nutrients and roots to move through it with ease. If you have unhealthy soil, applying weed controls or over-fertilizing will only provide inefficient short term treatments.
Myth 2: Chemical fertilizers and insecticides produce green grass. Fertilizers can quickly make an unhealthy lawn appear healthier. However, the chemicals can chase away and cause tremendous top growth of grass blades without allowing roots to grow at the same pace. Chemical fertilizers and insecticides do nothing to strengthen lawn health, and they're harmful to humans, pets and the environment.
Myth 3: Grass must be watered every day, especially in the summer. Not only is it a waste to water on a daily basis, but it's also unhealthy for the grass. If the grass stays wet for too long, it becomes more susceptible to diseases and insects. Although there is no single correct way to water, rich organic soils will certainly need less water than sandy or clay soils. One good practice is watering once a week for a long period of time to allow water to seep in. If you have a sandy soil (test it with a soil pH meter to find out), you may have to water twice as much. For more information on lawn care, visit HGTV.com.

GREEN TIP OF THE MONTH
Stock the Freezer: A full freezer runs much more efficiently than an empty one. Air is diffused better within a full freezer. If you can't stock the entire freezer, filling empty spaces with cardboard boxes will achieve the same effect.
